Sport 2005

In 2005 Tomaree High School students achieved excellence in a variety of team and individual sports.

Touch football proved to be an area of continued success. The Year 7 and 8 boys and girls touch teams both performed extremely well with the girls being crowned Hunter champions. The girls team attended the State Championships where they competed strongly, finishing 5th in the State. The boys open team were also Hunter champions and were narrowly beaten into 2nd place in the State titles. The girls open team finished a well-deserved 4th in the State.

Tomaree rugby league teams backed up from 2004 with another strong performance. The boys open team played in the state finals for the second year running after winning their Hunter division of the University Shield. Teams in 13s, 14s, 15s and 16s participated well in the Knights knockout competition winning through to regional finals.

Netball proved to be another success story. Both girls and boys teams competed strongly. The girls were Hunter champions winning through to State for the first time and ultimately reached the quarter-finals.

A Year 11 student was selected in the State AFL team and named player of the tournament whilst a Year 12 student was selected in the State touch football team. Both boys and girls soccer teams experienced success with a number of victories being posted in their respective competitions.

Tomaree girls 15's and open rugby union both had strong performances in their respective divisions. Throughout the year Tomaree fielded strong teams in open girls and junior and open boys cricket, boys AFL, tennis, table tennis, volleyball and water polo.

A Year 12 student played as the only female member of an 8 person Hunter lawn bowling team that won the State title. She went on to be named Hunter Academy of Sport team member of the year. Another student represented the school and the region at the State snowboarding titles.

A Year 8 student won the World Junior Endurance Horse Racing Championships in Bahrain as part of the Australian team. Another Year 8 student won the short course event at the State Archery Championships.

Students represented the Hunter at the State swimming titles, State cross-country titles and Athletics Championships.

Special education students participated enthusiastically in the Combined Hunter Special Education Athletics and Swimming Carnivals.

Sport 2006

In 2006 Tomaree High School students achieved excellence in a variety of team and individual sports.

Success in touch football continued with both open girls and boys winning through to state and claiming the Hunter championship. For the girls in what would be the final year for some they narrowly missed out on a much predicted state championship after recent years of success. The boys open team also travelled the familiar road to State and similarly lost after showing earlier the necessary skills to go all the way. Both teams made the semi-finals in the state knock out progression.

On the back of their success as a school side the following students were selected to represent Hunter in touch football. Sarah Chippendale, Amy Chippendale and Raegan Arndell for Open Girls touch, Teagan McCarty for under 15 girls touch.

Tomaree rugby league teams continued to grow in both reputation and performance. Although a younger boys open team missed out on getting to state after two successive years of claiming the Hunter Championship, the under 16’s recaptured their winning ability claiming the Hunter Championship for the Knights Knockout. The 16’s travelled to Penrith and played for the first time in the under 16 State rugby league final series.

A Year 12 boy was selected in the all schools National AFL team after previously captaining the NSW side.

Both boys and girls soccer. Teams experienced success with a number of victories being posted in the Bill Turner Cup.

Tomaree girls 15’s and opens rugby union both had strong performances in their respective divisions.

Tomaree High School claimed the Port Stephens Zone Championship in swimming, athletics and cross country. In swimming Tomaree High students claimed 8 of the 12 age champion trophies, in athletics 6 of the 12, and in cross country 7 of the 12.
