Forward Together
Tomaree High School
is part of a unique educational facility that also includes Tomaree
Primary School and Tomaree Campus of the Hunter Institute of Technology
(TAFE). Together, these three entities form the Tomaree Education
Centre. Tomaree High works closely with its partner primary schools to
ensure that educational opportunities for all local students are
maximised and that there is a smooth transition from primary to high
school.
Located on the Tomaree Peninsula at
Salamander Bay and close to Nelson Bay, Tomaree High is proud to be a
fully comprehensive, public school. Our strengths are our people:
students who bring a diversity of abilities, interests and backgrounds
to our classrooms and playgrounds; enthusiastic teachers and support
staff totally committed to developing each individual child; and
involved parents, local business and community partners who promote and
support our school in so many ways. We are also fortunate to operate
from modern, well equipped buildings located in beautiful surroundings.
At Tomaree High we emphasise the
importance of academic excellence. This has resulted in an outstanding
record of HSC results over many years. Students from Tomaree High (and
Nelson Bay High prior to 1998) pursue their dreams as doctors, lawyers,
engineers, researchers, small business operators, teachers and a
multitude of other careers. Our pursuit of excellence has also nurtured
students who excel in the creative and performing arts, public speaking,
a wide variety of individual and team sports, student leadership and
personal development activities. Students from Tomaree High School have:
won the Sydney Morning Herald Young Writer of the Year Competition; won
the State All Schools Touch Football Competition; captained State teams
and competed at national level in a variety of sports; won the Knights’
Knockout Rugby League Competition; performed overseas and on national
television; reached the state finals of the Lion’s Youth of the Year
Competition; represented their families, school and country on various
overseas exchange programs; gained Duke of Edinburgh Awards; awarded the
Port Stephens Youth of the Year; and even produced a school wine (3
vintages) from grapes grown at the school. These past and present
students are proof of the caring, yet challenging, environment that
exists at Tomaree High in which individual students are encouraged to
learn and grow to their full potential.
There are currently 1250 students
enrolled at our school from Years 7 to 12. Eighty teachers provide a
very broad senior curriculum that features the more traditional
subjects, including all senior extension courses, as well as a breadth
of nationally accredited vocational courses. The school’s academic and
co-curricula activities allow students to develop self confidence and
personal direction. Our school’s strong values and beliefs base assists
students develop their own social and moral code.
Tomaree High enjoys strong support from
parents and the local community. Our students assist a variety of local
charities and organisations in fundraising and in other ways throughout
the year. Literally hundreds of small and large businesses work with the
school to provide students with valuable work placement opportunities.
The school is also a focal point for many large and small scale
community events and activities. We are able to provide exceptional
venues and equipment for multimedia presentations, large musicals and
plays, intimate music and drama presentations, community courses in
computers, woodwork and aquaculture and our excellent gymnasium caters
for a variety of sports.
Specialist CAPA (creative and performing
arts) and academic extension classes operate in Years 7 and 8. Enrolment
in the Year 7 classes is competitive. For example, CAPA class students
are selected following consideration of their personal portfolio and
performances at an audition day. The school is also fortunate to have
two special education classes in which students with moderate and severe
disabilities receive a rich and varied education, including many
opportunities to participate in mainstream classes and work experience
within our community.
Real Futures is a major school
initiative that assists our students make good choices for their future.
Real Futures was established in 2003 with the support of the Beacon
Foundation, a national not for profit organisation, and is modelled on
its ‘No Dole’ program that now operates in approximately 100 schools
across Australia. Real Futures is helping to extend and strengthen
existing school-community relationships to the point where extensive
networks now exist. A number of truly innovative activities provide our
students with a significant advantage as they move from school to
further education, training or employment. Real Futures is an
outstanding community partnership focused on positively influencing the
futures of our young people.
