SMS
Notification
This
term we are going to
introduce a new system where student absences will be
directly notified using a text message to the mobile
phone of a contact parent. This system will offer a
number of advantages including the facility for parents
to officially notify an absence using a return SMS. The
starting date for this is still not definite at this
time.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE
Recently
school principals received a letter from the
Director-General for Education, Michael Coutts-Trotter,
concerning student attendance at school. It outlined the
government’s tougher stance on attendance and explained
that the courts now have the power to enforce School
Attendance Orders. This is of particular interest to
Tomaree High as our overall attendance is below state
and regional average and is a priority in our school’s
strategic and management plans.
Sport attendance
Our
school is very concerned about the number of students
who may not be meeting this requirement at present. Many
students repeatedly request early leaver’s passes for
Wednesday afternoon during sport. Whilst it is
appreciated that there are times when students need to
leave school earlier than the normal 2.00 or 2.30pm
finish for appointments, I am asking for your support
and cooperation in monitoring the number of sport
afternoons that your child misses.
We know
that, not surprisingly, students who regularly attend
school perform to higher levels than those who don’t. So
we will be working with parents to ensure that all
students attend every school day that they are able.

Tax
File Number
Secondary students may
need a TFN to apply for youth allowance or for part-time
and holiday employment. To make it easier for students
to get a TFN, students can choose to fill out a TFN
application form through their school.
This application form
requires information such as the student’s name, address
and date of birth. The Careers Advisor then certifies
the application. Students will also need to provide the
following information on the application form:
-
Students born in Australia will need to provide their birth certificate
number, state of issue and year of registration,
or
-
Students born overseas will need to provide their overseas passport
number and country of issue or Australian
citizenship certificate number and date of issue.
Schools are only
required to check that the relevant question on the
application form has been completed and are not required
to confirm the details against original documentation.
It is therefore not
necessary for students to bring their birth certificates
or other documentation to school.
If you haven’t already
obtained birth certificates you may need to consider
getting them for this and other purposes.
This is a voluntary
program and is being offered as a service to make it
easier for students to obtain a TFN. Yr 9 will be
applying during Maths lessons this term.
Students in Yrs 10, 11
& 12 without a TFN should see Mrs Cheetham, Careers
Advisor for an application.
