In 2004, the Parents & Citizens Association founded the
Premier's Debating Challenge to extend the opportunities available for
young debaters. In 2005 the Premier's Debating Challenge was merged with
the existing competitions run by The Arts Unit of the NSW Department of
Education & Training. The competition is now open to government school
students in Years 5-12. Each of the age divisions of the competition is
supported by the Macquarie Bank Foundation and the Arts Education
Foundation.
The Premier's Debating Challenge is open to students in
NSW government schools in the following categories:
-
years 5 & 6
-
years 7 & 8
-
years 9 & 10
-
Year 11
-
Year 12
The essence of debating is effective communication and
conflict of ideas and arguments. These elements are judged in three
categories: Matter, Manner and Method. All debates involve conflict
between two teams.
The two teams are called the AFFIRMATIVE and the
NEGATIVE.
Year 7 and 8 students in our school participated in the
Premiers Debating Challenge and won the Zone 6 competition.
They were semi finalists in the overall State
Competition, finishing 8th in their
Year group. |
